Phase 1 is done!

We finished wallpapering the last 2 rooms, and have been busy cleaning up and putting away all of our painting supplies, etc. FINALLY! We are scheduled to have an elevator installed in November for easier access from the ground floor living spaces to the first floor bedrooms, and there are repairs needed to the swimming pool, and work to be done in the kitchen and the yard--but those Phase 2 projects will keep until next year.

There's definitely a chill in the air and it's been dreary and raining all week. After living in the Arizona desert for 5 years, I grew accustomed to the endless sunshine. So, I'm definitely hoping for dryer days and fewer clouds next week. In the meantime, I'm learning how to make crepes and have tested recipes for both, sweet and savory. I thought they were delicious, even though their appearance might suggest otherwise. Luckily, I'm happy to continue practicing my technique since the homework is so tasty. Tomorrow I plan to try my hand at making an apple tart, in preparation for a guest that is coming to visit. Judy's arrival is the perfect excuse to do more sightseeing in the region over the next couple of weeks--including a short trip to Porto, Portugal--and I can't wait.

The moving truck with our belongings finally showed up, and after living out of a suitcase for the last four months, sleeping in our own bed felt absolutely amazing. We've been working hard from sun up to sundown(ish) ever since--unpacking, painting, wallpapering etc. The plan is to complete enough projects from our DIY list to put our own stamp on the house and make it a comfortable home, and then take some time off to explore the area abit before hitting the phase 2 projects. This room used to have white/gray laminate floors that Bill had initially planned to cover with new flooring....until we found out that we'd need a plumber to flush our entire heating system to raise the 2 radiators in the room, so Bill could lay the new flooring under them--at a cost of 400 to 1000 euro per radiator! Moissac, Moissac, Moissac

Our offer was accepted on the house in Moissac! It's still likely to be a 3-4 month process before the sales transacton is complete. We've asked the seller to consider letting us rent the property in the meantime--fingers crossed. Our shipping container has just arrived and is being stored in Belgium until we are in our own home--so the sooner I'm sleeping in my own bed the more money we'll save. The current owners invited us back to the home earlier this week, and asked their english-speaking neighbors to join us--which made conversation much easier. And they extended their generosity by allowing us to come back on Thursday, so I could bring my cousin, Kim, on a quick tour while she is visiting. Kim arrived from Nebraska on Wednesday, and will be traveling through Switzerland, Spain and Portugal before heading back to the states. Bill and I love learning about France and what our new life will look like, but having a visit from a kindred spirit is really the icing ...

Ready, Set, Go!

It's been quite a journey just getting to this point: Research, research, research—our eyes blurry from reading articles, watching videos, and following blogs of those who made this journey before us. We sold our house and condo in Arizona, then sold or donated most of our possessions. The visa process required us to fly to Los Angeles for interviews. We shipped a few select belongings to France in a shared container and packed two suitcases that we'll live out of for potentially the next six months until we find permanent housing. We arranged temporary housing and rental vehicles while we house hunt and learn to navigate the local highways. Getting our 85-lb Labradoodle, Murphy, to France was another challenge (spoiler: his kennel is the size of a Volkswagen Bug)—which presented its own set of issues.
