We have a closing date!

We've been waiting weeks for a hint of when the sale of the house will be finalized and we can schedule delivery of our shipping container (currently being stored in Belgium). The uncertainly has been marinating for awhile--add to that a dash of disappointment in our current AirBnB, and a heaping scoop of frustration from months of living out of a suitcase--and it was quickly becoming a recipe for diseaster. Lucky for us, we just received our closing date and its better than what we'd hoped: August 7th. We take possession of the new house in 2 weeks!! If our luck holds, the belongings we shipped from Arizona can get delivered shortly thereafter. No more uncomfortable furniture, no more cooking with limited utensils (goodbye dicing vegetables with a steak knife), no more drains that won't drain or toilets that won't flush. Cooking in this kitchen leaves a lot to be desired:
Even though this rental property is located in a strikingly beautiful part of the country--rolling hills filled with grapevines, olive trees, and sunflowers--there's just no easy way to see or enjoy it. You can't walk along the narrow, winding country highway or even pullover to take pictures, because there's no sidewalk or shoulder to provide any degree of safety. And, the lack of dogsitters in the area limits what we can do and for how long. As a result, we've kind of been stuck inside much of the time since having to change to this AirBnB.
But, now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and start planning all the DIY projects needed to whip our new house into shape. Great news and just in time. Let the adventure continue....

Our offer was accepted on the house in Moissac! It's still likely to be a 3-4 month process before the sales transacton is complete. We've asked the seller to consider letting us rent the property in the meantime--fingers crossed. Our shipping container has just arrived and is being stored in Belgium until we are in our own home--so the sooner I'm sleeping in my own bed the more money we'll save. The current owners invited us back to the home earlier this week, and asked their english-speaking neighbors to join us--which made conversation much easier. And they extended their generosity by allowing us to come back on Thursday, so I could bring my cousin, Kim, on a quick tour while she is visiting. Kim arrived from Nebraska on Wednesday, and will be traveling through Switzerland, Spain and Portugal before heading back to the states. Bill and I love learning about France and what our new life will look like, but having a visit from a kindred spirit is really the icing ...

Ready, Set, Go!

It's been quite a journey just getting to this point: Research, research, research—our eyes blurry from reading articles, watching videos, and following blogs of those who made this journey before us. We sold our house and condo in Arizona, then sold or donated most of our possessions. The visa process required us to fly to Los Angeles for interviews. We shipped a few select belongings to France in a shared container and packed two suitcases that we'll live out of for potentially the next six months until we find permanent housing. We arranged temporary housing and rental vehicles while we house hunt and learn to navigate the local highways. Getting our 85-lb Labradoodle, Murphy, to France was another challenge (spoiler: his kennel is the size of a Volkswagen Bug)—which presented its own set of issues. TRAVEL PLANS DELAYED: We've been temporarily grounded. In order for Murphy to fly to France, we are required to obain a pet passport from the USDA no more than 10 days before our arrival. So we carefully got his exam and vaccines completed, paid the fees, had the vet send the documentation electronically to the USDA with a prepaid overnight envelope (as required) and waited for the passport to arrive. Thanks to government turmoil, the passport has not yet been received -- and there is, of course, no way to contact the agency for a status update. So instead of starting our big adventure, we spent the day cancelling and rescheduling flights, car rentals, airport assistance, and hotels. FUN FACT: if we don't receive the passport in the next 3 days, we will have to begin the 10 day process all over again, including having to cancel/reschedule all the travel arrangements yet again.
